Can A Betta Fish Live In Tap Water? (Tap Water Safe Or Not)

Recently I traveled to Bangladesh for a few weeks. When I visited the live fish shop in Gulshan, I bought a pair of betta fish and a small round (1 liter) aquarium.

There are two betta fish in the same water for six consecutive days now they need to change the water in this small aquarium but there is no pet fish store near my hotel. Suddenly remembered, can a betta fish live in tap water?

Since this was my first experience in keeping betta fish, I didn’t know the answer either. Taking the problem very seriously, I started searching online and after about two hours I got my answer.

Yes, a betta fish can live in tap water but there are some conditions that must be met. The most important condition is that the water must be treated with a water conditioner before adding the fish to it.

Water conditioners remove harmful chemicals from tap water and make it safe for fish. I didn’t have a water conditioner with me so I went to a local store and bought one.

After adding the water conditioner to the tap water, I let it sit for 30 minutes before adding the fish. The betta fish have been living in treated tap water for four days now and they seem to be doing just fine.

If you do not have a water conditioner, before using the tap water, you must remove harmful chemicals called chlorine and chloramine from the tap water. Bottled water can be used as an alternative.

In this article, I will explain how safe tap water is for your aquarium fish and also discuss how tap water is harmful to your betta fish. If you want to be an expert on these things then go ahead with me.

Is Tap Water Safe For Betta Fish Live In?

Is Tap Water Safe For Betta Fish Live In

Tap water may be safe for humans but you may not know if it is safe for your betta fish. I tested this question for you by keeping my betta fish overnight in tap water. Here are the results.

Betta fish can live in tap water as long as it is treated properly. Most municipal water sources contain chlorine and other chemicals that can be harmful to fish.

To make tap water safe for your betta, you’ll need to use a water conditioner that removes these harmful chemicals. I recommend using a product like Seachem Prime which is specifically designed for this purpose.

Once you’ve treated the water, your betta should be able to live in it without any problems. Just remember to keep an eye on the water quality and make sure it remains clean and stable.

In general, tap water is safe for human consumption but may not be for the betta fish in your aquarium. We are doing a deeper examination on this matter to facilitate your understanding.

The answer to whether tap water is safe for your betta fish lies in the chemical composition of the tap water. Results of my research:

  • Chlorine in tap water —4 mg/l
  • Ammonia in tap water —0
  • Nitrites in tap water —0.25 mg/l
  • pH in tap water —-7.5

Bettas are tropical fish and prefer a water temperature of 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit. The ideal pH for bettas is between 6.8 and 7.4, although they can tolerate a range of 5.5 to 8.5.

The levels of chlorine and ammonia in tap water are not harmful to bettas as long as the water is properly conditioned with a dechlorinator/detoxifier. The nitrites, however, can be harmful to fish at levels above 0.3 mg/l.

The pH of the tap water is within the acceptable range for bettas. So, tap water is safe for bettas as long as it is properly conditioned with a dechlorinator/detoxifier and the nitrite levels are monitored.

How to make tap water safe for betta fish?

How to make tap water safe for betta fish

You may be in America and I am in Bangladesh now comes the real problem. My environment and your environment and climate are different which will change the chemical composition of your tap water.

Here I will break down step by step how to make your home tap water safe for your betta fish. This is not a difficult task just keep reading carefully.

1. Test the water

Your tap water is also important to check to resolve any issues with your betta fish. Test the water for hardness and chlorine levels to be sure that it’s safe for your fish.

You can use a test kit from your local pet store, or you can ask the pet store to test the water for you.

2. Add a water conditioner to the aquarium

Once you know that your tap water is safe for your fish, you can add a water conditioner to the aquarium. This will remove any harmful chemicals from the water and make it safe for your fish to swim in.

3. Use a de-chlorinator if possible

There are a lot of different water conditioners on the market, so it’s important to choose the right one for your needs. If you can find a de-chlorinator to use, it will be even better for your fish.

Dechlorinators work by removing chlorine and chloramine from the water. This is important because both of these chemicals can be harmful to fish. Dechlorinators also help to neutralize any harmful ammonia or nitrite levels in the water.

So if you can find a de-chlorinator to use, it’s definitely the best option for keeping your fish healthy and safe.

4. Use bottled water instead

If you’re worried about the safety of your betta fish, you can always use bottled water instead of tap water. Bottled water is a great option because it’s already been treated and it’s completely safe for your fish to swim in.

You can buy bottled water at any grocery store or convenience store, and it’s a great option if you’re not sure about the safety of your tap water.

5. Change 25% of the water every week

In addition to using bottled water, it’s also important to change 25% of the water in your aquarium every week. This will help keep the water fresh and safe for your fish.

6. Add live plants to the aquarium

Adding live plants to your aquarium is a great way to improve the water quality and make it more healthy for your fish. Live plants help to filter the water and provide oxygen for your fish. They also look really cool in an aquarium!

So those are some tips on how to make your tap water safe for betta fish. Just remember to test the water first, and then add a water conditioner to the aquarium. If you can find a de-chlorinator, that’s even better. And don’t forget to change 25% of the water every week.

How many days can Betta fish live in tap water?

How many days can Betta fish live in tap water

Betta fish can live in tap water for a few days as long as the water is properly conditioned with a dechlorinator/detoxifier. The nitrites, however, can be harmful to fish at levels above 0.3 mg/l.

So it’s important to keep an eye on the nitrite levels in the water if you’re going to be using tap water.

If the nitrite levels get too high, you’ll need to do a water change and add fresh, dechlorinated water to the aquarium.

I myself was inexperienced in this matter so I started searching online. American Fish Care (Now Aquatic Community) published an article on this in their magazine.

US Fish Care (Now Aquatic Community) has directed me to an article written by Dr. Paul P. Young, PhD that has been published in their magazine.

This article is about the care of Bettas and it says that Bettas can live in water with a temperature range of 68-86 degrees F, a neutral pH level of around 7.0, and hardness up to 15 dGH.

The article goes on to say that while Bettas can live in tap water, it is not recommended because of the chemicals that are present in tap water. These chemicals can be harmful to Bettas and other fish.

It is recommended that you use a water conditioner to remove these chemicals from the water before adding your Betta. I would also recommend using a filter in your tank to keep the water clean and free of harmful toxins.

Check the pH level of tap water for betta fish
